Crane Mat

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: For the structural steel portion of this project, a Manitowoc 555 was brought in to erect the building. The 3 issues we ran across were that we needed a suitable crane mat, we needed to grade out the site, and we needed to complete numerous underground storm repairs, (most were not designed yet), in a relatively short period of time. Attempts were made to come up with alternative ideas for the crane mat, but CCC-Steel was adamant that the iron workers would cut their time in half if we put a crane mat covering the entire building footprint.

COURSE OF ACTION: We ended up using Geofabric and 8" of 1X3 stone for the entire building footprint. This allowed us to have a cleaner site, a better lay down area, and provided a suitable sub-base for the crane and all aerial lifts. This worked well in area 6 where fill material was required, but caused us to double touch material in area 1 which was all a cut. There was no issue with lifts or equipment getting stuck during the project due to this crane mat, but we will never truly know the cost impacts if this was not done.

LESSON FOR FUTURE PROEJCTS: Review the extent of any underground work required when making the decision on the type of crane mat to use. Have a strong game plan / logistics plan during bid time on how we will handle the crane and access. Ultimately, money needs to be included in the bid so the project team can decide on the best course of action.
