JOB #3346 Michigan Gas utility- Jackson

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

A compressor pad was erected and the compressor later installed. Cementitious grout was carried in the estimate, however the line item on our proposal indicated (furnish and provide grout at compressor pad".

This application required epoxy grout and was indicated on a general notes sheet.

This resulted in a bust of approx. $50,000 in material and specialty equipment rental.

ROOT CAUSE:

COURSE OF ACTION:

The team attempted to submit an RFI confirming what type of grout was to be used, and after receive a response, a COR was sent in using that RFI as justification for additional cost. This was later rejected by the owner as it was included on a bid drawing that the project team did not have.  In talking to field personnel, the size of this pad should have warranted epoxy grout as well, something that CCC was not able to play ignorant to considering our vast experience at marathon in almost identical applications.

LESSON FOR FUTURE PROJECTS:

When using the most economical methods of construction, with or without a spec, these items should be clearly identified in our proposal letter as a qualification, exclusion, etc. to avoid this from becoming an issue.
