Press Process Design Coordination with Facility Design

Statement of Problem:
There were several issues to where the 2D press drawings provided by Rotem did not show enough detailed information for proper coordination. These included:
1) the press cable trays in pit 
2) The platforms and ladders between the presses.
3) D/B team not having a useable press 3D model.

The problem first arose with the press cable trays. Cable trays were shown in the pit in 2D plan but no elevation data was in the drawings, and the GM Project Manager realized this problem. When Rotem provided an elevation, CCC requested for the cable tray in 3D from Rotem. This did not get provided. The model manager from JEG then modeled in the process cable tray himself, based on the elevation feedback from Rotem, in a coordination meeting between CCC/GM. Once the cable tray was modeled in there were clashes with the utilities, the piers, and even other process (conveyor shredder duct). CCC then proceeded with making design changes to both the cable tray and the utilities around the tray. In addition to the cable tray, there were issues where press ladders were directly underneath sprinkler heads (head knockers) and an issue where an access platform was designed for the scrap conveyor directly below the pit supply air duct (head knocker). Both of these were not realized until after installation.

Course of Action:
CCC took it upon themselves to 3D model the press cable trays in order to coordinate and keep the pit utilities installation moving forward, at our own risk. Utilities were adjusted so as to miss the cable trays.
Where the ladders and conveyor platform were not caught, additional rework was required.

Lesson Learned for Future Projects:
For proper coordination between the process group and the facility group to take place, the press design needs to be broken down into manageable 3D models (components) for the facilty team to integrate and coordinate against, where heavy coordination must take place like a press pit. In this case 2D process plan drawings were not sufficient for coordination.
