Surveying of Existing Buildings for Addition Projects

  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Many instances the as-built buildings the a new building addition ties into are not square, plumb, or columns may not be accurately spaced. Some instances roof line is also uneven. CCC did not perform all facets of conducting a "Thorough" Existing Building Survey. We spaced our columns on a grid line to match columns without design input and collaboration of EOR/Structural Steel Model/Detailer. This resulted in gap in building that required shim plates.

COURSE OF ACTION
None

LESSON LEARNED
Conduct extensive Building Survey at conception of project. Provide survey to Project Team including: (Building Steel Contractor, Steel Detailer, EOR, and Model Integrator). Decide on alignment of building and steel design prior to foundation installation. Then the foundation layout, anchor bolt layout plan and steel will all conform prior to construction and will mesh better to existing building
