GM Pontiac Guardrails and Bollards Design

: STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Guardrails and bollards design varies for each plant based on what the plant has for existing standard and what management wants to use. Because of this, there was confusion between the team members on the type of guarding that should be used/installed. For interior guardrails protecting utilities, IBI Group detailed for bolt-down type, W-beam post guardrails. The post and guarding locations and lengths were coordinated based off of a marked up print from the GM Project Manager, and this type of guarding is common in other plants. However the AECOM representative noted that the RFPS listed for 6" concrete filled steel tube pipe posts for fire protection and 8" concrete-filled steel tube posts (48" H), both in a concrete foundation. RFPS did not advise specifically on guardrailing. When this was brought up, the design had to be revised.

COURSE OF ACTION
When AECOM brought up the issue with guarding not pertaining to the RFPS, the CCC Engineering Manager sought out the standard GM details for guardposts and guardrails from GM Supplypower website. The GM details found were closer in design to the RFPS specified details, but there was still differences. Ultimately CCC held a guardrail meeting to review all of the detail options and made revisions to the drawings based on directions from the GM Project Manager (change from w-beam post type to concrete-filled post type). The final solution was guardposts and rails that were a combination of the IBI design, the RFPS scope design, and the GM standard details design.


LESSON LEARNED
1) Hold a guardrail meeting aroudn 75% design completion and reference the RFPS for specific guarding requirements. The meeting will take place with the GM team and the plant to ensure that what is designed and located is in line with everyones expectations for level of protection and safety.
2) The AE should be aware of how to pull standard GM details from GM Supplypower website.
3) At bid time GF may want to sit and have a discussion with the plant on what type of guarding they desire before writing it into the RFPS.
