GM Pontiac Oily Wastewater Tank Design

  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
For this project a new, welded steel oily wastewater tank was provided in the scrap tunnel in lieu of relocating an existing tank, at no cost to GM. The new tank shop drawings did not include for a manway. The shop drawings were submitted, reviewed, and approved by the EOR. The tank was fabricated and installed. After install was complete GM stated that a manway was required. There is a summary for visual inspection and regular maintenance included in the submittal for the IW tank from Highland Tank (without manway). However a manway is sensible to include in the design for visual inspection and ease of maintenance (cleaning out sludge buildup). The GM OneSpec does not have a specific section for oily wastewater. The closest spec section is for wastewater treatment and outlines requirements for tanks - but does not state that a manway is required.

COURSE OF ACTION
CCC held an internal meeting with JEG to review the current tank design and maintenance practice, as well as the implications of cutting in a manway at the top of tank, which is currently being discussed with the tank supplier. Action taken is TBD.

LESSON LEARNED
Wastewater tanks design must be equipped with manways for visual inspection and for ease of maintenance. This statement should be added into the GM Onespec section 462003 or in a specific spec section for oily wastewater. This will prevent any misses in future custom wastewater tanks.
