Steel Framing Reuse Design Issue
print icon
  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
During the bid, the reuse of the steel was offered as a voluntary alternate that GM accepted. In theory, the concept made sense. However, during construction many issues were discovered with certain members that was not evident on design drawings or as-builts. Did not yield as much savings as expected. More rework on the steel. More re-engineering. Doesn''''t look as nice as new steel, but has the strength/capacity.

COURSE OF ACTION
None

LESSON LEARNED
These VE type concepts need to be studied in more detail before accepting them. The idea of reusing steel is not bad, but all aspects need to be studied.
