Use of fibers in apparatus bay floor

  Project Phase:Construction/Installation
Delivery Method:General Contract-Prime

Statement of Problem:Initial structural drawings called for 4,000 PSI concrete with WWF. During a site project meeting the mechanical contractor noted that there was no insulation called for under the interior slabs and that this would degrade the effectiveness of the radiant heat floor system. Upon discussions with the AE and CCC concrete team, an RFI was submitted and approved to add 2" rigid foam insulation, calcium chloride as an accelerator and replace WWF with fiber mesh for the upper bunk house 4" slab. The use of fiber mesh in lieu of WWF was recommended as a partial cost offset for the added insulation. The Upper slab was poured with no issues.

At a later date the apparatus bay 10" slab was poured with the same mix design including steel fibers. This was not specified for this pour. It was the wrong mix design. The owner accepted the presence of fibers, but there was added cost for the concrete mix ($3,778) and CCC subsequently had to buff out the floor to remove surface fibers ($442) for a total cost impact of $4,220.

There is an appearance issue as well in that there are random small pock marks where surface fibers were burnished off.
