STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

The ground mounted air supply fans around the STG and Aux boiler buildings did not have dampers in the ductwork. Dampers were added during construction and gravity dampers were chosen for lead times and less cost. These dampers are being pulled open just enough to allow cold air to enter the building during winter months and freezing instruments.

COURSE OF ACTION:

Resolution: install motorized dampers on these fans.

ROOT CAUSE:

Gravity dampers were not a good solution for the application.

LESSON FOR FUTURE PROJECTS:

Utilize motorized dampers in lieu of gravity dampers to avoid performance issues.
