E24-026 Bar Rack and grit System Improvement

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

The piles excavation level was not identified in drawings or clearly stated during the bid process between the sitework and the pile contractor. This was a plan and spec job. During the bid process, the excavation elevation was not coordinated between the excavation sub and the pile sub, leading to a scope gap which is yet to be fully identified.

ROOT CAUSE:

Did coordinate the elevation scope between the two subs

COURSE OF ACTION:

On large or water/wastewater estimates, a prior bid writing confirmation is required to clarify the ground level on wher is the pile contractor is responsible to start their scope.

LESSON FOR FUTURE PROJECTS:

Prior to submitting bids, when a piles scope is required to complete the scope, extra effort needs to be given to verify the excavation level before handed over to the pile contractor.
The lead estimator or the civil estimator needs to email the sub in writing to get this confirmation.
This was our lead estimator has time at the bid day to plug numbers and not worry about any scope gaping or add contingency to meet the requirement.
